How to Calculate Percentages
Finding a Percentage of a Number
To find a percentage of a number, multiply the number by the percentage and then divide by 100:
Result = (Value × Percentage) ÷ 100
Example: To find 15% of 100
Result = (100 × 15) ÷ 100 = 15
Finding What Percentage One Number is of Another
To find what percentage one number is of another, divide the first number by the second number and multiply by 100:
Percentage = (Value1 ÷ Value2) × 100
Example: To find what percentage 25 is of 100
Percentage = (25 ÷ 100) × 100 = 25%
Calculating Percentage Increase or Decrease
To calculate percentage increase or decrease, subtract the original value from the new value, divide by the original value, and multiply by 100:
Percentage Change = ((New Value - Original Value) ÷ Original Value) × 100
Example: To find the percentage increase from 100 to 125
Percentage Change = ((125 - 100) ÷ 100) × 100 = 25%
Understanding Percentage Points vs. Percentages
It's important to distinguish between percentage points and percentages when discussing changes in percentages:
Percentage Points
A percentage point represents an absolute change in a percentage. For example, if an interest rate increases from 5% to 7%, it has increased by 2 percentage points.
Percentage Change
A percentage change represents a relative change. For example, if an interest rate increases from 5% to 7%, it has increased by 40% ((7-5)/5 × 100 = 40%).
